Our assignment: pair with someone from our group we aren’t close with and wanted to get to know better and spent time together. Josh Blair and I visited the Hugh Lane Gallery, a free exhibit with beautiful paintings and sculptures.
Sir Hugh Percy Lane Was born in 1875 in County Cork Ireland. He was the son of a rector father and a mother who was the daughter of Dudley Persse, of Roxburgh, County Galway Galway. In 1893, when he was 13, he joined the London art dealers Martin Colnaghi as a trainee-painting restorer. Later he joined Marlborough Galleries for some years, then opened a "gentleman art-dealer" in London. Lane had a keen eye for paintings, which brought him success and money. He became an expert on Impressionist paintings, and helped to enhance the collection at the National Gallery in London, where he was a director.
My favorite part of the gallery was on the 1st level, a collection of sculptures from Eva Rothschild. Rothschild was born in Dublin in 1971 and currently works out of London. This is her first solo museum exhibition in Ireland and it is wonderful. She uses a variety of materials in her sculptures, which are known for its protagonist style. Rothschild’s work tries to turn values of modernism and ideas of utopia upside down. She aims to deconstruct the history of 20th century abstract art and how we as humans develop structures to support our values.
