National Geographic has described our morning drive as "the most beautiful place on earth." Our hilarious driver took us arond Slea Head telling us all about the beautiful landscape in the hills and at sea. Right off the shore of the Dingle Peninsula there are many islands scattered through out the sea. One interesting island is long and large with hills that pop up in the most peculiar places forming the shape of a man. Because of the island’s shape the island is nicknamed the sleeping giant.
According to folklore, there once was a man who was taken by the fairies to the fairy world. The fairy world was meant to be the complete opposite of our world, a parallel universe. Everything looked the same, but in reality, everything was very different. While in fairy world he didnt realize how much time was passing as he was enjoying the food and the company of what were his new family. He stayed in the fairy world, which was assumed to be an island, for hundreds of years.
It wasn’t until much later that he realized that a long time had passed and so he wanted to return to his own world, even if just for a day. The fairies gave him a horse and said that as long as he was on that horse, he could ride into his old world and then return the following day. But, if he stepped onto human soil, then the years would catch up with him and he would die.
So, while he was living with the fairies he had grown very tall , to an enormous height, a giant. He rode into his old world, not recognizing anything after his many years away. Then he came across a young boy who was pinned under a boulder. None of the townspeople could get the boy out from under the large rock, so the “giant” decided to offer his services. Remembering what the fairies said about not leaving the horse and so he tried to remain on the horse while trying to save the boy. But he slipped on the reigns and ended up falling on his back into the sea, behind the town of Dingle. And, because he fell off of his horse and into the sea, the giant became the island.
