Our residence in Belfast is conveniently located near the Botanic Gardens of Belfast. It is home to the Tropic Ravine and the Palm House. There, I was transported into a warm and inviting climate that instantly put me at ease, so home. I was so excited to see many of the plants that grow at my home, a surprising site to see so far from Hawaiʻi. As I sat there with my eyes closed, breathing in the pikake, I felt at home. There was pikake, ti leaf, aloe, bananas, plumeria, anthuriums, ferns, and Pele’s hair.
The palm house is a greenhouse that is one of the first glasshouses constructed from curved glass. The Palm House has a warm and cool wing creating two very different habitats to grow a wide variety of plants from pretty flowers to trees. The Tropical Ravine also uses a greenhouse atmosphere to be able to grow its trees, vines, and moss. The Tropical Ravine has a temperate and stove section recreating multiple tropical habitats to grow a plethora of jungle plants.
