Although Bloody Sunday happened in the past, its remnants are still being dealt with in the present. What happened after the battle was slow, painful, and insensitive.
In February of 1972 the friends and families of the dead and injured had to relive the events of Bloody Sunday. The Lord Chief Justice Widgery headed the inquiry that had a lot of sketchy activity. Many eyewitnesses didn’t get to make their testimony and the testimonies they did collect from witnesses and the soldiers were altered to tell the story one way. In the end the inquiry was less than 50 pages and Widgery exonerated the army and claimed that even though no evidence was found that the dead were armed it was still a possibility. Also the commander of that day Colonel Wilford was awarded Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and his adjutant Mike Jackson became chief of staff.
That did not sit well and would be the beginning of a long and painful inquiry process that would not end until the whole truth was exposed. In June of 2010 a new inquiry concluded that the dead and wounded were innocent and the paramilitary had done wrong. This time three lords, one from Britain, one from Canada, and one from Australia heard over 2,000 statements and took up more than 5,000 pages. This has been the longest legal process in British and Irish history.
The members of the paramilitary from Bloody Sunday have yet to be prosecuted and so this is nowhere from over. The community of Derry still waits for the day that justice is served.
Warning. Rated T for Terrible. If you are a child, don’t read this, if you have high blood pressure, don’t read this, if you can keep your cool, read the letter sent to the parents of Jim Wray from the head of the Ulster Volunteer Force.
Dear Mr and Mrs Wray (James and Sarah),
As I hold no regrets whatsoever for the death of your son James there doesn’t be so much talk or fuss when some of the poor soldiers or policemen are brutally murdered in cold blood by the so called “Irish Rats Association”. Yes, the “I.R.A” are the cowards, as your son was not shot by a cowards bullet, and he was not murdered, he was happily killed because he was a terrorist along with his other twelve rebel friends.
Also remember that our troops are not serving on foreign grounds, Northern Ireland is part of the “United Kingdom”, so the army is at home on British Territory. If you don’t like living in this country, why don’t you then move south or west to the bloody Free State? There we wouldn’t have to pay you out our welfare benefits and allowances which you are gladly accepting under “Her Majesty The Queen”.
“May sweet Jesus have mercy on his soul”, ha! ha! what a laugh, that’s what it says at your sons death in the “Irish News” what you should have stated is this “May Hell Roast Him” and the rest of his mates.
Your son was a fucking bastard and a fenian cunt, he was full of hatred so he can say goodbye to glory. Your Rebel bastards are doomed.
“The Wray Family”, get out of your home or be burned out, Ulster is Britain, God Save the Queen. No Surrender.
