I made good use of my type I slow twitch oxidative fibers today (I walked a lot). We began the day stuffing ourselves at the hotel breakfast. We walked on the rainy streets to Trinity College where we were guided on a tour. Trinity College’s legal name is actually the Provost, Fellows, Foundation Scholars and the other members of Board, of the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin. Marcus our guide was witty, informative, and wonderful. We were able to get into the chapel, and saw the beautiful stained glass windows and church organ. Our tour included, history, stories, and a glance at the Book of Kells and the Long room.
The Book of Kells is collection of 4 volumes of manuscripts of the Gospel in Latin. Created in about the year 800 by monks from Iona. A beautiful book filled with tiny beautiful writings, called insular majuscule script, and beautifully tiny images shocked me in many ways. The first is that monks were ok with making mistakes and would indicate it by drawing pictures over it, adding 3 dots in a triangle, and putting decorative red crosses on the page. The book also uses snakes to represent Christ an almost oxymoron, or a direct correlation. And after being attacked by Vikings and moving to Kells from Iona the monks just didn’t have the morale or manpower to finish and so the end of the book has half completed pages with sketches and prep work that was never seen through.
Ireland and the UK are known for their language arts, arts, and philosophy courses (the same as majors to people from the US), you don't tend to hear much about its science programs. At Trinity College the science and engineering departments are cast off on the other side of the fields. This lead me to my research of the sciences in Ireland. University College Dublin, UCD, ironic, I know, offers many science classes that include the basics and more, however compared to UCDenver, it has less than half the science courses. Irelands universities have a wide breadth of science courses (majors) from biotechnology, nursing, chemistry, and engineering.
I am working to become an optometrist and so looking into the science courses in Ireland lead me to look into optometry in Ireland. In Ireland Optometrist label shops as Opticians, in the US an Optician usually refers to someone who isn’t necessarily a doctor but fits and sells glasses. In Ireland you come out of school after 4 years with a Bachelors in Optometry, in the US you come out after 8 years, if all goes perfectly, as an O.D. doctor of optometry. There is only one school of Optometry in Ireland, Dublin Institute of Technology. There are over 620 practicing optometrist in Ireland today.
If you are considering studying in Ireland, you should. Some money saving reasons to study in Ireland are, the cost of living is cheaper, the cost of tuition is cheaper, and you can finish in 3 years. Tuition at Trinity College is only €3,000 only $ 4108.50 US dollars. Some other reasons are that the campuses are beautiful, the people are friendly, 40% of the popularion is under the age of 25, and its an English speaking country.
