We landed in an overcast and rainy Dublin, not a surprise, and the humid air and cold breeze kissed our skin. We got some Euro and got on the bus, which took us just a couple blocks from the Maldron Hotel. The Maldron Hotel is a lovely place, beautiful rooms, yummy breakfast, and friendly service. Suzie and I went gallivanting a bit in search of food and to explore our new neighborhood. In just a couple hours we got some cheap and yummy sandwiched from a Spar, some Taytos, and yummy croissants. We also got to explore the Garden of Remembrance made in memory of those who gave their lives fighting for Irish freedom. Lives were lost in these battles the 1798 rebellion of the Society of United Irishmen, 1803 rebellion of Robert Emmet, 1848 rebellion of Young Ireland, 1867 rising of the Fenian Brotherhood, 1916 Easter Rising of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army, and the the 1919–21 Irish War of Independence of the Irish Republican Army. Not only have people passed from these major battles but the everyday fights for freedom.
We wandered around Upper O’Connell Street packed with life, from shops, eateries, and the general post office, which during the 1916 Easter Rising was completely destroyed, except the front, because of the fighting. Other buildings destroyed because of the 1916 Easter Rising are the Four Courts and the Custom House. There we saw the Spire of Dublin a 120m long and spike that you either love it, or hate it. Ian Ritchie Architects created the spire in 2002 and represents a bright future for Ireland in the 3rd millennia. And then we slept like logs after our exciting day of travel.
